Budget Cuts Hurt Gifted Children

In an article entitled “Smart kids ignored? Disparities in gifted education”, the USA Today reported that many gifted classes are being canceled due to deep budget cuts.

Parents of gifted children are beginning to question whether the recent decreases in federal funding are forcing a focus on lower performing students to help them achieve basic proficiency.

There appears to be two opposing opinions on this issue.  Some feel that forcing gifted students to sit in general curriculum classes’ results in frustration and boredom and may impede a gifted child’s ability to excel.  Others prefer grouping students together and tailoring the curriculum to each child.

Most agree however, that we need to help gifted children reach their potential, so they can contribute to the future success of this world.

How do we best tackle this issue?
