Records Management
In an environment where identify theft is out of control, strong records management is crucial. However as we know, many people often overlook proper records management practices as a result of budget constraints.
In a recent Daily News article, Staff Writer Elizabeth Lazarowitz reported a disturbing school records management breakdown. It appears that box of employees' personal documents were found on curb in front of a Williamsburg school over a recent weekend.
The News investigated and found lists of school custodial staff members with names, addresses and Social Security numbers, as well as work applications and signed tax documents for several employees, most dating from the 1980s and 1990s. Not Good!!
The Department of Education recommends that schools shred all sensitive material before disposal. This particular case is under investigation.
Always remember that when you obtain personal information from someone, you are responsible for its safe keeping and disposal. Many cities and towns have designated shredding days and offer free mobile shredding. If budgets are an issue, take advantage of these services.
Any records management best practices out there to share?
