California Education to go Digital

Another first from the innovative state of California?  If Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gets his wish, California will implement a new statewide initiative to replace printed textbooks with digital and online textbooks.  In an effort to save millions of dollars in book purchases, the governor has asked for a feasibility study.  As reported in a recent eSchoolNews article, the state already appears to be ready to replace science and math textbooks in the fall.

This initiative is no small undertaking.  Every child will need the technology tools and/or digital readers to access online and digital media.  Textbook publishers must develop and sell relevant electronic content that will meet state standards.  Its one tough goal, but one that we would like to see the governor achieve.

If savings on textbook spending will indeed be used to hire more teachers and reduce class sizes as Gov. Schwarzenegger promised, then let’s get started.

What do you think?  Can the Gov. pull it off?
