Hugs – The New Hello

Is a new generation of “Love Children” brewing?  Many parents grew up in the 60s and remember when hugs and peace signs were the social greetings of choice.

Sarah Kershaw of the New York Times recently reported on today’s new phenomenon, “hallway hugging”.  In a world of wireless and non-physical communications such as social networking, hugging has become a student’s way of saying “hello” and “goodbye”, both in and out of school.

Critics and supporters of hugging are plentiful.  Some principals have banned hugging or implemented policies limiting the practice.  Considering the challenges this generation of students must face, hugging seems to be a natural and peaceful way to show care and support or just say hello.

Is banning this new favorite social custom the right way to go?
