Zero-tolerance

Wow.  Interesting article in the Providence Journal EdWatch, written by Julia Steiny.

Seems a University of Massachusetts Professor believes, supported by research, that zero-tolerance policies have had a negative effect on schools and students.  Her research indicates that schools are no safer and have not improved under zero-tolerance law.

The article and research presented is quite eye opening.  Much of the discussion centers around the effect on punished students.  It would be interesting to hear views from the other side (the majority).  Do school administrators, teachers, parents, students and communities see it this way?

Should schools adopt a kinder and gentler policy of understanding the underlying causes of students' misbehavior and become involved with teaching appropriate and socially acceptable behavior?

Do zero-tolerance polices in schools need to end?
