Pay It Forward – Mystery Donations

Is it a case of “Pay It Forward”?  That’s what seems to be on the minds of over a dozen colleges and universities that recently received substantial mysterious donations.

The Associated Press reported that nine colleges received almost $45 million in mystery donations over the past few weeks.  The mystery continues as just yesterday, Hunter College in NY received a similar donation of $5 million.

The dilemma here is that colleges do not know who is donating the money and if it’s from a legitimate source.  The donor requires that their identity remain anonymous and colleges must sign a confidentiality agreement prohibiting them from investigating the donor’s true identity.  Of course we all hope that this is a wonderful act of kindness that will make scholarship money available to many students and benefit our colleges and universities.  But in these less than certain times, you just can’t help thinking that this could end up being a big disappointment.

It sure makes for a great story.  What do you think?
