Bullying
Many youngsters continue to be victims of bullying and more and more studies are linking negative experiences with long term physical and mental health problems. Sadly, some students have committed suicide or have been badly beaten or killed by bullies. Recently, parents have filed suit against school officials and districts for failing to stop bullying.
What can parents and teachers do?
Parents, school administrators and students are rising to the challenge and tackling this issue with information, training and games. Schools are adopting tougher regulations that cover both playground and cyberspace bullying.
Today there are many well known websites that provide counsel and training to address this issue. They include the National Crime Prevention Council and Stop Bullying Now by the US Department of Health and Human Services. There are also established and successful school programs such as Peace Games that provide children with the skills, knowledge, supportive relationships, and opportunities to prevent violence and build safer communities.
Finally, many national school assembly performers such as Cris Johnson’s “No Bullies Allowed”, the Uncle Brothers and the Cap Cities Stunt Team are available to talk and connect to students and deliver a powerful message of anti-bullying.
Let’s rally around this cause, deal with bullying and create safer communities.
